Grammy-winning bassist Victor Wooten performs with his family band, The Wooten Brothers, at the Granada Theater in Dallas.
Victor Wooten plays the Granada Theater on Saturday, December 19, with his brothers on stage alongside him. The bill is Victor Wooten and The Wooten Brothers, so you're getting the family together rather than a solo date. If you've only ever known him as a bassist, that's a good place to start, but it's not the whole story.
He grew up in a house full of musicians, and he learned the bass by watching his four older brothers: Regi on guitar, Roy 'Futureman' on drums, Rudy on sax, and Joseph on keyboards. Together they formed the Wooten Brothers Band, which opened West Coast shows for Curtis Mayfield and War. That family connection is still a big part of who he is, and it's exactly what's coming to Dallas on the 19th.
Since then, he's built a career that's hard to pin to one spot. He settled in Nashville and teamed up with banjoist and composer Béla Fleck, and along the way he's picked up five Grammy Awards. Bass Player magazine named him Player of the Year three times, and Rolling Stone put him on their list of the top ten bassists of all time. He's also written The Music Lesson: A Spiritual Search for Growth through Music, which is now part of the curriculum at Berklee College of Music and Stanford University. He gave a commencement address to the Class of 2016 at the University of Vermont, and he runs the Center for Music and Nature at the 147-acre Wooten Woods retreat in Tennessee.
