Del Castillo returns to the Kessler Theater with special guest Guy Forsyth.
Del Castillo are back at The Kessler Theater on Saturday, October 10, with special guest Guy Forsyth. It's a return to the Kessler for the Austin-based group, and they'll be sharing the bill with Forsyth.
If you're not familiar with them, Del Castillo started as a Latin flamenco project between brothers Rick and Mark del Castillo in the fall of 2000. For a while they stuck to instrumentals, but then their friend Alex 'El Lobo' Ruiz began writing soulful lyrics, and Mike Zeoli added his own contributions. That's when the band grew into the cross-cultural outfit they're known as now—blending rock, Latin, blues, and world music, fronted by Ruiz, with the brothers playing dual lead and rhythm nylon-string guitars. Since their 2001 debut Brothers of the Castle, they've picked up around 18 awards, including Austin Music Awards/SXSW 'Album of the Year' honors for Vida (2002) and Brotherhood (2006).
They've also spent a fair amount of time in the world of film. Director Robert Rodriguez became a close friend after a 2002 concert and brought them in for the soundtracks of Spy Kids 3D, Once Upon a Time in Mexico, Sin City, and Grindhouse. He also formed the group CHINGON with them, whose 'Malaguena Salerosa' Quentin Tarantino later cut into the ending of Kill Bill Vol. II. Willie Nelson recorded 'I Never Cared For You' with the band and called it his favorite version.
