Birthday bash to mark the 100th anniversary of the Palace Theater, opening the centennial celebration that runs through 2028.
The Palace Theater is turning 100, and it's throwing a birthday bash on Saturday, November 14, from 1 to 5 PM. The party is in downtown Columbus, and it kicks off a centennial celebration that runs through 2028.
If you've spent any time downtown, you know the Palace. It's the gilded room anchoring LaVeque Tower, and it opened in 1926 as a live-performance venue that drew crowds for vaudeville and music. By the late 1970s, it had stopped operating, and the plan was to turn it into a parking garage for the tower. Katherine LaVeque, who bought the tower in 1977, fought to save the theater, funded the renovation herself, and even polished the brass entry doors. Her obituary calls the rescue perhaps her greatest legacy. She ran it from 1979 to 1989 before gifting it to the city and CAPA for essentially a dollar, and the lobby was later named in her honor.
CAPA took over operations in 1989, and a 2018 renovation of nearly $8 million updated the roof and HVAC and restored the auditorium. Seating 2,695, it's CAPA's second-largest theater and one of the most diverse in the city, still staging opera, Broadway, comedy, and music. Over the years it's hosted acts like Duke Ellington, Jay Leno, Jerry Seinfeld, and John Mellencamp.
