Free public lecture by Stevie 'Dr. View' Johnson on hip-hop, music education and the academic book, part of the Lectures in Music Studies series.
Stevie "Dr. View" Johnson brings his talk to the Music and Dance Library on Monday, November 2, from 4:00 to 5:30 PM. The lecture is titled What does Scholarship Sound Like? Hip-Hop, Music Education, and Reimagining the Academic Book, and it's part of the Lectures in Music Studies series, which runs Mondays at 4 PM and is co-sponsored by the university libraries and the School of Music.
Johnson is an assistant professor of Creative Practice in Popular Music at The Ohio State University. He's also the founder of SOUSE, a performance-research platform that positions DJing as a method of inquiry, and the founder and executive producer of Fire in Little Africa, a Motown-released multimedia project inspired by Black Wall Street. He earned his PhD in Higher Education Administration from the University of Oklahoma, where his dissertation, Curriculum of the Mind, became the first non-traditional dissertation to receive the ASHE's Bobby Wright Dissertation of the Year Award. He was later named the 2023 Nasir Jones Hip Hop Fellow at Harvard University.
This talk draws on that same title, Curriculum of the Mind, which the University of Michigan Press published as a hip-hop album and a multimedia e-book. The project weaves together original music, lyrics, video, storytelling, and written scholarship, and the lecture works from that same intersection of music and academic writing. If you've ever wondered how hip-hop fits into a scholarly context, this is exactly the kind of thing Johnson spends his time thinking about.
