The Flea's production of 'we come to collect: a flirtation, with capitalism', a stand-up comedy and performance piece about American consumerism, with ASL interpretation.
Jenn Kidwell brings we come to collect: a flirtation, with capitalism to the Wexner Center for the Arts for three performances: Thursday, March 4; Friday, March 5; and Saturday, March 6, 2027. All three start at 7 PM. It's presented by The Flea as part of the Wexner's performing arts season.
Kidwell, an Obie Award-winning writer, director, and performer, shares the stage with ASL artist Brandon Kazen-Maddox, a third-generation heritage signer and choreographer. Kazen-Maddox's signing is woven into the narrative and the choreography rather than running alongside it. The show mixes stand-up comedy, performance art, and the carnivalesque to take on the story of American economic might, and Kidwell describes it as an invitation to "roll in the pigsty of American consumerism."
It's a piece with a long history behind it. It was commissioned by Woolly Mammoth's Weissberg Commission program and developed with support from MCA Chicago, the Ucross Foundation Residency, Under the Radar's UFO series, Venturous Theatre Fund, Subcircle Residency Program, Northwestern University, the Hiatt Family, and The Flea. It world premiered at The Flea on August 30, 2025, and this run at the Wexner is its Midwest premiere.
