Live performance by the Los Angeles jazz quintet SML, which blends improvisation, groove, electronics and rhythm.
SML play the Wexner Center for the Arts on Friday, November 6, with two sets that night: one at 7 PM and another at 9 PM. They're a Los Angeles-based jazz quintet that pulls together improvisation, groove, electronics and rhythm, and they describe their work as pushing the boundaries of jazz. The sound is built around expansive, rhythm-driven compositions and deep collaborative interplay, creating immersive musical landscapes that evolve in real time.
On stage, the lineup is Anna Butterss on electric bass, Jeremiah Chiu on synthesizers and live sampling, Josh Johnson on saxophone and electronics, Booker Stardrum on drums and percussion, and Gregory Uhlmann on guitar and effects. That mix of acoustic instruments and electronic processing is a big part of what they do, with the synthesizers and sampling running alongside the bass, sax, drums and guitar.
They've put out two albums so far. Their debut, Small Medium Large, was recorded live at the band's first gigs at the former Highland Park venue ETA in late 2022 and early 2023, post-produced the following year and released in summer 2024 to wide critical acclaim. They followed it with a second album, How You Been, in fall 2025. Outside the group, the members have played with Tortoise, Jeff Parker, Makaya McCraven, Meshell Ndegeocello and Joel Ross.
