Free evening of big band music by the student jazz ensembles Jazz Workshop and Jazz Lab at Weigel Hall, the Ohio State University School of Music performance venue.
Jazz Workshop and Jazz Lab are taking the stage together at Weigel Hall on Wednesday, November 18, at 7:30 PM. It's a double bill of big band music, with both ensembles performing on the same night. If you're not familiar with the names, these are the jazz bands coming out of the Ohio State University School of Music, and they're playing in their home territory.
That home territory is Weigel Hall, located at 1866 College Rd N in the university district. It's a performance venue within the School of Music that hosts concerts by student ensembles—wind symphonies, jazz bands, orchestras, and choirs—and the hall itself serves as the primary concert space for the school's undergraduate and graduate student performances. So when you see the Jazz Workshop and Jazz Lab bands playing here, you're hearing them in the room they've spent their semester preparing for.
As for the music, it's a big band night. That means full horn sections—trumpets, trombones, and saxophones—backed by a rhythm section of piano, bass, drums, and guitar. The Jazz Workshop and Jazz Lab are two separate ensembles, and they're sharing the bill, so you'll get two different takes on the big band sound in one evening. It's a good way to hear how two different groups approach the same tradition, each with its own set of players and its own energy.
