Funk and rhythm and blues cover band Hoodoo Soul Band plays The Rumba Cafe on Summit Street.
Hoodoo Soul Band plays The Rumba Cafe on Sunday, October 25, and if you've never seen them, there's a good bit of history to catch up on first. They started back in 1995 as a side project for a few veterans of the Columbus music scene who just wanted to play funk and rhythm and blues. They spent their early years playing a weekly Sunday-night gig at Oldfield's on High, and it took ten years before they made the move over to The Rumba Cafe.
They've built their name on being a cover band at heart, but they don't just run through the hits. They're known for putting their own twist on the standards and introducing audiences to funky gems they might not have heard before. That approach has paid off in the local awards: they took home the Columbus Music Award for Best Cover Band in 1999 and Best Live Performance in 2000. In 2002, they opened for Ray Charles.
There's a live CD from their Oldfield's days that got some critical attention, recorded back in 1997, so they've been at this for a long time. The set on the 25th is just the band, with the same funk and R&B they've been playing since the start.
