Ballet Folclorico Xochihua celebrates Dia de los Muertos with free traditional Mexican folk dance performances in the IKEA Columbus self-serve warehouse area.
Ballet Folclorico Xochihua is bringing Mexican folk dance to IKEA Columbus on Saturday, October 17, as part of the store's celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month. The performance is themed around Dia de los Muertos, and it's happening in the self-serve warehouse area—the part of the store where you pick out your own flat-packed furniture—rather than on a traditional stage. It's a bit of an unusual spot for a dance performance, but that's part of the appeal.
There are two separate shows on the day, each running for a half hour: one from 12:00 PM to 12:30 PM and another from 2:00 PM to 2:30 PM. Since they're the same performance, you only need to catch one. If you're already planning a trip to the store, you can just time your visit around whichever slot works better for you. Both are free, and there's no registration required, so you can just show up and watch.
Ballet Folclorico Xochihua specializes in Mexican folk dance, and this particular set is built around Dia de los Muertos, the Day of the Dead. It's a holiday that's all about remembering and honoring ancestors, and the dance is a way of bringing that tradition into the room. The whole thing is presented as part of IKEA Columbus's Hispanic Heritage Month programming, so it's one of several ways the store is marking the month.
