Contemporary holiday dance spectacle that mixes hip hop dance with Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker, directed and choreographed by Jennifer Weber and opened by Kurtis Blow.
The Hip Hop Nutcracker comes to the Palace Theatre on Friday, December 18, at 7:30 PM, presented by CAPA. It's a contemporary holiday dance spectacle that takes Tchaikovsky's classic ballet and remixes it with hip hop, running the composer's timeless score against hip hop dance.
Directed and choreographed by Tony and Olivier Award nominee Jennifer Weber and executive produced by Eva Price, the show follows Maria-Clara and the Nutcracker Prince on a dream adventure. It takes them from 19th-century Germany to contemporary New York City, with digital graffiti and visuals, a battle with mice, and a visit to the land of sweets. It's billed as a family-friendly holiday mash-up.
On stage, a dozen all-star dancers are joined by an on-stage DJ and an electric violinist. The show is fronted by hip-hop pioneer Kurtis 'The Breaks' Blow, the first rapper to sign with a major record label, who opens the night with a short set. The whole thing is presented by CAPA, the Columbus Association for the Performing Arts.
