A festive, south Wales-set musical on the tales of Robin Hood, for ages 7+, with access performances.
The Merry Adventures of Maid Marian opens at the Sherman Theatre on 27 November, running through to 2 January. It's a made-by-Sherman production in association with Theatr Iolo, and it's a new take on the Robin Hood tales, this time set in south Wales. The show is built for ages 7 and over, and it's the theatre's main Christmas production for the year.
Paul Dodgson wrote it, Lee Lyford directed, and Emily Jones provided the illustrations. The cast is made up of actor-musicians, so the music is played live on stage rather than coming from a recording. The production is described as fierce, funny and full of heart, and it focuses on courage, fairness and the power of people coming together. The run includes plenty of matinees and evening performances throughout the festive season, so there's a good range of times to choose from if you're fitting it around Christmas plans.
One of the things that stands out is how much work has gone into making it accessible. There's a full programme of accessible shows: BSL interpreted by Julie Doyle, audio described by Michelle Perez, and captioned by Erika James, plus relaxed performances. For more than 40 years, the Sherman's Christmas productions have introduced generations of south Wales children to the stage, and this one fits into that tradition.
