Musical theatre by Hijinx Odyssey and Gagglebabble, inspired by Raymond Briggs' The Snowman, with puppetry and original music.
Hijinx Odyssey are bringing The Abominable Snowman to the Weston Studio at the Wales Millennium Centre, with performances running from Thursday 26 to Saturday 28 November. It's a musical theatre piece they've put together with music theatre makers Gagglebabble, and it takes its cue from Raymond Briggs' The Snowman.
The story is set during the big freeze of 1962/3, and it opens in 'The Quebec', a once-renowned venue in Tiger Bay. From there, it follows two young characters, Sid and Gef, and their talking mongoose companion as they travel as far north as they can, hoping to thaw the heart of the Abominable Snowman and put an end to the Endless Winter. It's a puppetry-led production with original music, so it's as much about the visuals and the sound as it is about the story.
Behind it is Hijinx Theatre, a Cardiff-based company founded in 1981. They've built a reputation for award-winning theatre and film, and they're well known for creating performances with learning disabled and/or autistic artists. This one is a collaboration with Gagglebabble, who come in on the music side of things.
