A festive, family-friendly concert of seasonal classics conducted by Luis Castillo-Briceño, ending with Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker Suite.
The BBC National Orchestra of Wales are at BBC Hoddinott Hall on Thursday 3 December, with Luis Castillo Briceño conducting. It's a festive, family-friendly concert of seasonal classics, part of the BBC NOW 2026-27 season, and it starts at 19:30.
The programme opens with the magical Prelude from Humperdinck's Hänsel und Gretel, followed by Frank Bridge's sparkling Christmas Dance 'Sir Roger de Coverley'. From there, the evening takes a bit of a turn with Benjamin Britten's The Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra, a piece that walks you through the different sections of the orchestra one by one. The whole thing closes with Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker Suite, the seasonal favourite that gives the concert its name.
Aleighcia Scott is on hand as narrator, which is particularly useful for the Britten piece, as it's designed to show you how an orchestra actually works. The whole evening is billed as a celebration of seasonal classics, and it's a family-friendly one, so it's the sort of thing you can bring the kids to.
