A dark, gripping psychological thriller play by Craig Warner, directed by Roxana Silbert, based on Patricia Highsmith's novel.
Strangers On A Train comes to the New Theatre on Wednesday 2 June 2027, as part of a UK and Ireland tour that opens at Theatre Royal Windsor on 15 January. Bill Kenwright Ltd presents this stage adaptation of Patricia Highsmith's novel, written by Craig Warner and directed by Roxana Silbert.
If the title sounds familiar, that's because Highsmith's book also served as the source for Alfred Hitchcock's iconic 1951 film. The story starts with two strangers meeting on a train journey. Charles Bruno proposes 'the perfect crime' — two murders committed by two strangers with no motive and no consequences. Guy Haines dismisses it as a joke, until Bruno's obsession spirals out of control and traps him in a nightmare of guilt, manipulation and fear. It's billed as a dark, gripping psychological thriller about obsession and the devastating consequences of a chance encounter.
Behind the scenes, the production is directed by Roxana Silbert, former artistic director of Paines Plough, Birmingham Rep and Hampstead Theatre, and associate director of the Royal Shakespeare Company. The play is dedicated to the memory of Craig Warner, who died earlier in the year. It's a psychological thriller in the truest sense — the kind of thing that starts with a single, strange conversation and ends with a life completely unravelled.
