Recital by the Cohen-Wingfield duo of works by Trinity composers Stanford, Gray and Vaughan Williams.
The Cohen-Wingfield duo are playing at Trinity College on Sunday 8 November, in the Old Combination Room on Trinity Street. It's a violin and piano recital, and the whole thing runs for an hour, from 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm.
The programme is built around three composers who all had a connection to Trinity: Charles Villiers Stanford, Alan Gray, and Ralph Vaughan Williams. Stanford and Gray were successive Directors of Music at the college, and Vaughan Williams was their most famous student. The set brings them together in one go, so you hear the line running through them rather than each piece in isolation.
On the night, the duo will play Alan Gray's Violin Sonata, which doesn't get out much, alongside Stanford's 5 Bagatelles Op. 183 and Vaughan Williams' 6 Studies in English Folksong. The Vaughan Williams is probably the most familiar of the three, and it sits well with the other twoβthe Stanford is a set of short, characterful pieces, and the Gray is a full sonata that rarely makes it onto a programme. Hearing them side by side gives you a better sense of how they relate, especially with the college connection tying them together.
