Youth drama festival in which local schools stage abridged Shakespeare plays for their community at the Cambridge Junction.
The Shakespeare Schools Festival comes to Cambridge Junction on Monday 16 November, starting at 19:00. It's the flagship project of Coram Shakespeare Schools, and it's billed as the world's largest youth drama festival, with more than 300,000 young people having taken part over the years.
The format is straightforward: local schools stage abridged Shakespeare plays for their own community, and the festival gives students from more than 350 schools a professional theatre platform to perform them. It's as much about what happens before the curtain goes up as what happens on stage, with the project focusing on developing oracy, teamworking and confidence in the young people involved.
Behind it all is Coram Shakespeare Schools, a national cultural education charity that works with Shakespeare to reach young people. They describe their aim as instilling curiosity, empathy, aspiration, self-esteem, literacy and teamwork, and giving students the confidence to see that all the world is their stage.
