One-night stand-up show by Cambridge Footlights performer Tom Sweeney, who talks about being from Leeds.
Tom Sweeney brings his stand-up show Ribbing for Your Pleasure to the ADC Theatre on Friday 30 October, and it's a one-night-only run, so this is the only chance to catch it in Cambridge. If you've followed the university's amateur theatre scene over the last few years, the name will ring a bell: Sweeney is a Cambridge Footlights performer and writer who's built his following right here in the city.
He's been a regular across the Footlights' various stages, writing and performing in the Footlights ADC Smokers, the Footlights Spring Revue, the Footlights International Tour Show and the Footlights Stand-Up Showcase. He's also worked behind the scenes as a script editor on several productions, so there's a fair bit of writing craft that goes into his work beyond just standing up and talking. He's taken his act up to the Edinburgh Fringe as part of Free Footlights too, and he's now touring stand-up shows across the UK.
As for what to expect on the night, Sweeney describes it in plain terms: he sets out to make the audience smile, giggle and laugh, telling little jokes, pulling silly faces and talking about being from Leeds. It's a straightforward approach to comedy — the kind of set that doesn't try to reinvent the wheel, but just aims to be funny. If you're in the mood for a night of jokes and a bit of character work, this is exactly that.
