Play by the Fletcher Players, Corpus Christi College's amateur dramatic society, about Anne Hathaway and the stories behind Shakespeare.
The Fletcher Players are at The Corpus Playroom with To Thine Own Self, a play about Anne Hathaway and the stories lost behind Shakespeare. It's the final night of a run that opened on 14 October, so this is your last chance to catch it before it closes.
The play puts the spotlight on Hathaway, the woman who spent her life in Shakespeare's shadow, and looks at the parts of her story that didn't make it into the history books. It's a domestic angle on a name that usually brings to mind the stage and the sonnets, and it's being put on by the Fletcher Players, the college's amateur dramatic society.
There's a bit of history to the room itself. The Corpus Playroom opened in 1979, when Caroline Oulten and Mark McCrum turned some disused Corpus Christi rooms on St Edward's Passage into a theatre. It's always been student-led and run by the Fletcher Players, and over the years it's seen the likes of Hugh Bonneville, Sam Mendes, Emma Corrin and Stephen Fry pass through. Fry even wrote the play Latin! for the room's opening night. The society eventually handed over management to the Cambridge Arts Theatre in 2001 and the ADC Theatre in 2011, and these days they act mainly as a funding body, supporting several shows every term at both the Playroom and the ADC. They've got a particular commitment to original, daring student theatre and new writing, which they programme through their Smörgåsbord night once every Michaelmas and Lent.
