BBC Radio 2 Folk Award-winning folk duo Rowan and Anna Rheingans bring their experimental trad sound to Cambridge Junction.
The Rheingans Sisters play Cambridge Junction on Wednesday 18 November, with the show presented in partnership with Cambridge Folk Festival. It's Rowan and Anna Rheingans, sisters who grew up in the Peak District surrounded by traditional music, encouraged to take up the fiddle by their musician mother and violin-maker father.
They've both worked in different circles: Rowan is well known from the BBC Folk Award-nominated trio Lady Maisery, while Anna lives and works as a fiddle player in Toulouse, an expert in southern French folk music. Together they won a BBC Radio 2 Folk Award for 'Best Original Track' with 'Mackerel', and were later nominated for 'Best Band' at the same awards. Their album Start Close In, produced by New York-based Adam Pietrykowski, landed at number two in The Guardian's Top 10 Albums of 2024.
Live, they pull in more than just two fiddles. The set blends fiddles, voices, feet, banjos, guitar, synths and the medieval tambourin à cordes, and they describe it as an immersive, avant-garde trad journey of baroque fiddle tunes, trance beats and metal-inspired arrangements, improvisations and voicenotes. It's a long way from the traditional folk they grew up with, though that's where the whole thing starts.
