Live concert by drum and bass pioneer Goldie MBE with a full band at Cambridge Junction.
Goldie is playing Cambridge Junction on Wednesday 11 November, performing with a full band. For those who know him as a DJ, it's a different thing to see him on stage with a live ensemble behind him.
If you're not familiar with the name, Goldie — born Clifford Joseph Price — is one of the most recognisable figures of the jungle and drum and bass scenes that grew out of UK rave culture. He first made a name for himself as a graffiti artist in the early 1980s, then moved to the US in 1986, where he got deep into New York's hip-hop scene and started making the gold dental jewellery that became a signature of his look. He later worked under the alias Rufige Kru and, in 1994, co-founded Metalheadz, a label that became a cornerstone of drum and bass.
His debut album, Timeless (1995), which includes 'Inner City Life', reached number 7 on the UK Albums Chart and is still talked about as a landmark of electronic music. That was followed by the double album Saturnz Return in 1998 and The Journey Man in 2017. He's also done a fair bit outside of music: he's appeared in films like The World Is Not Enough and Snatch, and on television in EastEnders and Celebrity Big Brother. In 2016, he was appointed MBE.
