A new adaptation of Bertolt Brecht's 1941 play, a satire on the rise of Hitler, by the Cambridge University Amateur Dramatic Club.
The Cambridge University Amateur Dramatic Club are bringing The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui to the ADC Theatre, running from Tuesday 26 January to Saturday 30 January 2027. It's a new adaptation of Bertolt Brecht's 1941 allegorical masterpiece, translated by Isaac Sallé.
If you're not familiar with the play, it's a half-comic, half-horrifying satire on the rise of Hitler and the Nazi elite. Brecht swaps the German political landscape for the underworld of Chicago, where Arturo Ui and his gang seize power over the city and its local vegetable trade through sordid corruption and chilling violence. The title itself is part of the point: the 'resistible' bit is Brecht's reminder that this kind of rise to power isn't inevitable—it can be stopped if people act.
This production does something a bit different with the setting. It brings together the Nazis of the 1930s, a boxing ring in the 1980s, and a week in 2027, with the action set in an American boxing gym. It's part of the CUADC/Footlights Lent '27 season, so it's one of several shows the club will be putting on during the term.
