Musical by the Cambridge University Musical Theatre Society about a man who dislikes musicals when a meteor makes everyone start singing and dancing.
The Guy Who Didn't Like Musicals runs at the ADC Theatre from Thursday 15 to Saturday 17 October, put on by the Cambridge University Musical Theatre Society. It's a musical based on the story by Jeff Blim, and if you've never come across it, the premise is exactly what the title says: it follows Paul, a regular guy in the town of Hatchetfield who openly dislikes musicals, until a meteor strikes the local theatre and people start spontaneously singing and dancing. From there, it's a musical apocalypse he has to try and stop.
It's a production with a full live band conducted by Rich Mandal and Justin Yu, music and lyrics by Jeff Blim, a book by Nick and Matt Lang, and choreography by Izzy Price. The show runs 135 minutes with a 15-minute interval, so it's a proper evening out rather than a quick turn. It's aimed at ages 16 and over and contains very strong language, which is something to keep in mind if you're bringing anyone younger.
There's a bit of local history to the venue too. The ADC is Britain's oldest university playhouse, run by the University of Cambridge and almost entirely staffed by students with no Faculty involvement. Plays have been staged there since 1855, when the Cambridge University Amateur Dramatic Club first met and performed in the back room of the Hoop Inn, almost where the theatre stands today.
