Alt-folk trio The Furrow Collective play live at Cambridge Junction with their reinterpretations of traditional folk songs, in partnership with the Cambridge Folk Festival.
The Furrow Collective play Cambridge Junction on Tuesday 3 November, starting at 8:00 PM. They're performing as a trio: Lucy Farrell on viola, voice and saw; Emily Portman on banjo, concertina and voice; and Alasdair Roberts on guitars and voice. The show is presented in partnership with the Cambridge Folk Festival, and under-14s need to be accompanied by an adult.
They describe themselves as an alt-folk trio, and storytelling sits at the heart of what they do. Their set is built around contemporary reinterpretations of traditional English, Scottish and wider folk songs, so the songs they've grown up with come back in their own voices. It's a line-up that pulls from a few different traditions — the viola, the banjo, the concertina, and the saw — and they all sing.
They've been at this for a while. Their debut album, At Our Next Meeting, came out in 2013, and they were named Best Group at the 2017 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, shortly after their second record, Wild Hog (Hudson Records). Since then they've put out Fathoms in 2018, and their latest, the lunar-themed We Know by the Moon.

There's more to the night than just the music. The band is developing Cantastoria, a storytelling project that pairs digital single releases with 'crankie' theatre — hand-turned crankies that illustrate the songs. The crankies are made by Lucy Farrell, who is a visual artist as well as a musician, so the visual side of the show comes from within the band. Tickets are £21.50, and the venue is Cambridge Junction, in J2 with unreserved seating.
