The Fletcher Players, Corpus Christi College's amateur dramatic society, stage Qui Nguyen's dramatic comedy 'She Kills Monsters' at The Corpus Playroom.
She Kills Monsters opens at The Corpus Playroom on Tuesday 17 November, running through to Saturday 21 November. It's a production by the Cambridge University Amateur Dramatic Club, put on as their Freshers' Play, so it's the first show of the new academic year.
The play is a dramatic comedy by Qui Nguyen, and it's a bit of a trip. It follows Agnes Evans, who, after her sister Tilly dies, finds herself drawn into the Dungeons & Dragons world Tilly had built. The story is as much about Agnes coming to terms with her sister's death as it is about the fantasy world she discovers, and it's described as a high-octane piece of writing. If you've ever spent any time with D&D, you'll recognise the kind of world it's playing with.
It's being put on by the Fletcher Players, the resident company at the Playroom. They're the college's amateur dramatic society, and they make a point of putting new writing at the heart of what they do, with showcases like Smörgåsbord as part of that. The Playroom itself has a fair bit of history behind it: it opened in 1979 in disused Corpus Christi rooms on St Edward's Passage and has since become a student-led venue. It's a place that's fostered a long list of names you'll know — Hugh Bonneville, Sam Mendes, Emma Corrin, and Stephen Fry, who wrote the play Latin! for its opening.
