The Danel Quartet play Schubert, Weinberg and Shostakovich, centred on Schubert's String Quintet.
The Danel Quartet play West Road Concert Hall on Tuesday 17 November, with a programme of chamber music by Schubert, Weinberg and Shostakovich. The night is built around Schubert's String Quintet, one of the great works of the chamber repertoire, and it's especially known for its slow second movement, which is often described as transcendental.
Alongside that, they'll be playing Weinberg's String Quartet No. 7, a poignant and introspective piece coloured by Jewish folk influences. The two sit together as part of a wider evening of Schubert and Russian repertoire, with Shostakovich also on the bill.
The Danel Quartet are celebrated interpreters of both Schubert and Russian music, and they're noted for their ensemble, lyricism, intensity and rhythmic drive. That's a fair amount of ground to cover in one night, but it's the kind of territory they've built their reputation on.
