Dinner jazz evening in which Robin Phillips and James Brady play the music of Chet Baker at the Gonville Hotel, as part of the Cambridge Jazz Festival 2026.
Robin Phillips is taking over the Gonville Hotel on Thursday 19 November, singing the music of Chet Baker as part of the Cambridge Jazz Festival 2026. Phillips is a singer and pianist who's often compared to Baker, so this is him leaning right into that connection. He's not doing it alone, either: he's joined by trumpeter James Brady, with Charlie Pyne on acoustic bass and Alex Best on drums, and special guest Louis Thorne on guitar.
There's a bit more to this than just a tribute. Phillips and Brady have worked together for years, and they've recently spent time travelling across Europe interviewing musicians and people who knew Baker for a new film documentary about his life and music on the continent. The set they're playing here is fluid and drawn from that story, so it's not a fixed list of hits. You'll hear 'Almost Blue', 'Do It The Hard Way', 'Let's Get Lost', 'The Thrill Is Gone' and 'You Don't Know What Love Is', and the rest will shift around them.

It's set up as a dinner jazz evening, so you've got a couple of ways to do it. There's a two-course meal and an arrival drink to go with the music, or you can just come for the concert if you've already eaten. The whole thing runs from 6:45 pm to 9:40 pm at the Gonville Hotel, 2 Gonville Place, CB1 1LY.
