Luke Wright combines poems and stand-up to explore his life as an adopted person in 'Later Life Letter'.
Luke Wright brings his show Later Life Letter to Cambridge Junction on Friday 23 October, an hour that mixes poems and stand-up to tell the story of his own adoption. It's a personal one: the life he's lived and the one he might have had, and the space in between.
Across the hour, Wright works through a few specific moments that anchor the whole thing. There's the experience of stumbling across your birth mother on Facebook; the question of how to honour the parents who raised you while still satisfying a curiosity about where you came from; and the small irony of marrying a social worker. He moves between those things with a mix of poetry and stand-up, and the show even works in a bit of drum and bass.
Critics have called him one of the most popular live poets in England, and they describe his writing as working with wit, pathos and silliness in equal measure. That's a fair way to sum up the ground he covers here, too — it's a show about adoption, but it doesn't stay in one gear, and it doesn't shy away from the lighter side of things.
