Jazz quintet led by Cambridge saxophonist Sam Miles reimagines jazz standards with special guest vocals from Australian singer-songwriter Georgia Van Etten.
Sam Miles Quintet play the University Arms on Sunday 22 November, with the set running from 14:30 to 16:30. Cambridge saxophonist Sam Miles leads the group, and the afternoon is built around jazz standards reimagined through fresh, contemporary arrangements. The quintet is drawn from musicians in Cambridge and London, and the whole thing is timed to coincide with the Cambridge Jazz Festival.
Joining them on vocals is special guest Georgia Van Etten, an acclaimed Australian singer-songwriter whose voice pulls from soul, folk, country, rock and cinematic pop. She's headlined London's Omeara, and her debut album, Deep Black Water, got international attention with features from NME, MTV, BBC Radio 2 and BBC Radio 4. She's also played festivals like the Porretta Soul Festival and The Long Road, so she's well-travelled beyond the UK.
On stage with her, the quintet puts together a full horn section and a tight rhythm section: Sam Miles on tenor saxophone, Vij Prakash on trombone, Sandy Suchodolski on double bass and Dave Ingamells on drums. With Miles and Prakash on the horns, the arrangements have plenty of room to breathe, and the presence of a double bass and drums keeps it firmly in jazz territory.
