An evening of art, talks, music and making inspired by the exhibition 'Sunil Gupta: Life with a Camera, 1970 - Now', with live music and short house tours.
Kettle's Yard is opening late on Wednesday 25 November, from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm, for a night of art, talks, music and making. The whole evening is built around the exhibition Sunil Gupta: Life with a Camera, 1970 – Now, so you'll find live music running throughout and short house tours to take you through the space. It's a good way to see the work without the usual daytime crowds.
The exhibition itself is a major survey of Sunil Gupta's photography, which runs from 19 September 2026 to 31 January 2027. Born in New Delhi in 1953, Gupta has been working for over five decades, and this show brings together more than 130 pieces. It covers street photography, portraits, and both commissioned and personal projects, reflecting a life spent moving between Delhi, Montreal, New York and his long-term home in London.
His work is often described as intimate, subversive and beautiful, and it's been a part of the international fight for queer rights, particularly in India and the UK. Much of that comes from how he looks at the tensions between tradition and modernity, and between the public and private spheres. A few of the highlight series on display include Friends and Lovers from the 1970s, Christopher Street (1976), Mr Malhotra's Party (2007–2012), and Dissent and Desire, a collaboration with Charan Singh from 2015.
