Professional actress brings the myth of Arachne and Athena to life, followed by a hands-on Greek weaving workshop to make an evil eye.
Athens Living Museum is bringing a Greek mythology experience to The Great Barn at Manor Farm in Bourn on Friday 30 October, from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm. It's a collaboration with Greek artists that pairs a live performance with a hands-on weaving workshop, so you're not just sitting and watching.
The performance centres on the story of Arachne and Athena, a myth recorded in Book VI of Ovid's Metamorphoses, written around 8 CE. A professional actress performs the tale, which is framed as a timeless lesson in humility, creativity and the consequences of hubris. The story follows the mortal weaver Arachne, whose skill becomes so great that she dares to challenge the goddess Athena herself to a contest—and the fallout that follows.
While the story unfolds, you'll be weaving your own evil eye, a traditional Greek symbol believed to ward off negative energy and bring good fortune. They provide the personal loom and the threads, so you can make one even if you've never touched a loom before. The session rounds off with a soothing tea brewed from a traditional blend of Greek herbs, served alongside sweet and savoury Greek snacks. It's listed as family-friendly and sits across the city's art, exhibition and theatre programmes.
