Stand-up show in which Nick Steen plays his horror-fiction persona Garth Marenghi, parodying terrible genre writing.
Garth Marenghi is coming to Cambridge Junction on Wednesday 11 November, with This Bursted Earth taking the stage in J2. If you're not familiar with the name, Marenghi is the horror-fiction persona of Nick Steen, who's often described as a ghastly hybrid of Alan Partridge and Jeremy Clarkson. It's a particular brand of gothic humour that works best when you're in on the joke.
The character first made a splash as a surprise hit at the 2000 Edinburgh Festival and went on to win the Perrier Award in 2001. Since then, the act has grown around Marenghi's life as horror fiction's 'Grand Frightener', the author of the Sunday Times bestsellers Garth Marenghi's TerrorTome and Garth Marenghi's Incarcerat. This show follows the three-book trilogy that began with This Bursted Earth.
As for what that actually means, the story lands in Stalkford, where the author's imagination is bursting out of his brain and threatening to burst the town itself. The visions that follow are exactly the kind of thing Marenghi specialises in: a sinister Black Steeple, eerie Catherine-wheel lights in the sky, and a giant skeleton with a moustache. It's a pitch-perfect parody of terrible genre writing, as Chortle put it, and The Guardian summed it up by saying it 'puts the 'boo' into book tour'.

It's a comedy show that wears its horror influences on its sleeve, and if you've got a soft spot for the kind of writing that takes itself far too seriously, it's right up your street. The performance is on Wednesday 11 November at 7:30pm in J2, with unreserved seating, and tickets are £30.50.
