Free guided exhibition tour with Kettle's Yard Assistant Director Susie Biller of Sunil Gupta's photography survey 'Life with a Camera, 1970 - Now'.
Kettle's Yard is hosting an exhibition tour of Sunil Gupta: Life with a Camera, 1970 – Today on Thursday 3 December, led by the gallery's Assistant Director Susie Biller. It's part of a larger survey that runs from 19 September 2026 through to 31 January 2027, so if you can't make the tour, you've still got plenty of time to see the work on your own.
Sunil Gupta was born in New Delhi in 1953, and his work over five decades has been a constant presence in the fight for queer rights, both in India and the UK. Much of it sits right in the tension between tradition and modernity, and between the public and private spheres. His life has been one of migrations, moving between Delhi, Montreal, New York, and his long-term home in London, and the survey brings together more than 130 works from across those cities.
There's a wide range of material to get through: street photography, portraits, and both commissioned and personal projects. Friends and Lovers documents his social life as a young man in Montreal in the 1970s; Christopher Street captures New York's queer community in the wake of the Stonewall riots; Mr Malhotra's Party covers a period of intense lobbying to change anti-gay laws in India between 2007 and 2012; and Dissent and Desire, a collaboration with Charan Singh from 2015, chronicles contemporary LGBTQ+ life in Delhi. Ben Luke of The Nerve has called it one of the most original and inventive bodies of work in contemporary photography.
