Free guided tour of the Cast Gallery exploring LGBTQ+ objects and stories from ancient Greece and Rome.
Bridging Binaries is an LGBTQ+ tour of the Museum of Classical Archaeology on Friday 23 October, from 2:00pm to 3:00pm. It's part of the University of Cambridge Museums' LGBTQ+ tours initiative, which was developed by the Change Makers Action Group and funded by Arts Council England. The tour is led by a team of volunteers who are working to diversify the stories the museum tells and to approach its collections in new ways.
The route takes you through the atmospheric Cast Gallery, where the statues and sculptures of Ancient Greece and Rome open up a spectrum of identities across time, place and culture. The guiding thread is that same-sex desire needs no modern labels to have existed across the ages, and the tour follows lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer-related objects, from goddesses and ancient myths to powerful emperors. The volunteer guides share their own selection of stories to challenge binary approaches to gender and sexual identity.
