Free Halloween half-term guided tour through the history of video games at The Centre for Computing History, with museum entry.
The Centre for Computing History is running a special guided tour on Friday 30 October, called Spooky Game On!, as part of its October half-term Halloween activities. It starts at 2:00 pm and lasts about 45 minutes, with the museum's own gaming experts leading the way through the history of video games. The tour itself is free, but you'll need to pay museum entry to get in: £12 for adults, £8 for children, £10 for concessions and students, and £23.50 for a family ticket covering one adult and two children, or £34 for two adults and two children. That ticket gets you museum entry for the whole day, so you can stick around after the tour is over.
If you haven't been, the Centre for Computing History is a hands-on computer museum in Cambridge, founded in 2007. It holds a collection of vintage computers and game consoles, many of which you can actually play. Alongside the exhibitions and educational workshops, it runs Broken Tech, Broken Earth, a project looking at how the explosion of technology over the last 80 years has impacted the environment. The museum also celebrates figures like Ada Lovelace, the world's first computer programmer, and Margaret Hamilton, the pioneering software engineer who coined the phrase 'software engineering'.

Because it's part of the half-term programme, it's a good one to bring the kids along to — though anyone under 14 needs to be accompanied by an adult. There's a Pac-Lunch Shop on-site for snacks if you need a break. You do need to book in advance, and payment is by PayPal. The museum is at CB1 3EW, so you're well-placed to spend the rest of the afternoon exploring the rest of the collection.
