Cambridge Schola sings a service of Compline or Vespers in the Cast Gallery of the Museum of Classical Archaeology, with wine or elderflower pressé.
Cambridge Schola are performing at the Museum of Classical Archaeology on Monday 16 November, in the Cast Gallery on the first floor of the Classics Faculty on Sidgwick Avenue. It's part of their regular Monday night series: they sing a service of Compline or Vespers every Monday evening, each time in a different chapel or church around the city, always open to the public and free of charge. This time, the music moves out of a church and into the museum.
The programme is a mix of the 20th century and the early Baroque. They'll be singing Britten's Niobe, Debussy's Syrinx, and Danby's Apollo, alongside de Monte's Venere e Dafne, Bennet's high our souls inspire, and Elgar's All creatures now. It's a broad spread, from the early 17th century through to the moderns.
The setting is a big part of the evening. The Cast Gallery houses the museum's collection of casts from antiquity, so you'll be listening to the music surrounded by figures from the ancient world. They're framing the whole thing as a meditative contemplation, an invitation to a reflective experience rather than a formal concert, and they'll be offering a glass of wine or an elderflower pressé to go with it.
