Volunteer-led free tour of the Cast Gallery that follows LGBTQ+ objects from ancient Greece and Rome to challenge binary views of gender and sexual identity.
Bridging Binaries is a volunteer-led tour at the Museum of Classical Archaeology on Friday 23 October, from 2:00pm to 3:00pm. It's part of the University of Cambridge Museums' LGBTQ+ tours initiative, which was developed by the Change Makers Action Group and funded by Arts Council England. The tours are run by a team of volunteers who help diversify the stories the museum tells, and they'll be the ones leading you around.
The tour takes place in the Cast Gallery, where statues and sculptures from Ancient Greece and Rome show a spectrum of identities across time, place and culture. You'll follow lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer-related objects from the ancient world, and the starting point is that same-sex desire needs no modern labels to exist across time. The volunteer guides share their own selection of stories to challenge binary approaches to gender and sexual identity, so the route they take might change depending on who's leading.

It's aimed at adults, and these are pilot tours, so it's a good time to get in on something new. The Cast Gallery is on the first floor and reachable by lift, so it's wheelchair accessible. The tour runs for about 45 minutes, and it's free, though booking is essential. You'll find the museum at the Faculty of Classics on Sidgwick Avenue, Cambridge CB3 9DA.
