Toronto modern folk singer Abigail Lapell plays an all-ages show at The Portland Arms on Chesterton Road.
Abigail Lapell plays The Portland Arms on Wednesday 18 November, bringing her Toronto-based modern folk to Cambridge. It's a solo bill, so the whole night is hers.
Lapell's music is the kind of folk that doesn't sit still. Critics have described it as 'prairie noir' or 'Canadiana desert rock', and that gives you a fair idea of the territory she works in: haunting, spacious, and with a certain starkness that suits the open landscapes she comes from. She's won three Canadian Folk Music Awards, including English Songwriter of the Year and Contemporary Album of the Year, and has reached number one on Canadian folk radio, with more than 48 million streams across digital platforms. She tours widely across North America and Europe, and this is one of the UK dates.
On stage, she handles the instruments herself, moving between vocals, piano, harmonica and finger-style guitar. That variety means the set can shift from a piano-led ballad to something more rhythmic and guitar-driven without needing a full band to fill the gaps. Her latest album, Anniversary, came out in May 2024 on Outside Music, so there's new material to draw from alongside the older songs she's been touring.
