Fast-paced, character-led comedy by and for state school students, created by Cambridge Footlights, about the British comprehensive system.
Cambridge Footlights are bringing A Comprehensive Understanding to the ADC Theatre on Wednesday 4 November, with the show running through to Thursday 5 November. It's a fast-paced, character-led comedy created by and for state school students, and it takes its material from the chaos of the British comprehensive system.
The Footlights describe it as a show built from the ground up around that specific environment. They point to the kinds of things that only really make sense if you've been through it: lying to Ofsted, the unspoken rules of the lunch queue, and the general scramble of a state school day. From there, it punches up at the institutions that shaped them, using surreal satire and a brand of humour they say was forged in that very setting.

Because it's character-led, much of the comedy comes from the people who populate those halls rather than just the situations they find themselves in. The Footlights are known for their sketch-based approach, and this one keeps its focus on the state school experience, leaning into the absurdity of the system rather than just the nostalgia of it. It's a short run, with the show playing on 4 and 5 November at the ADC Theatre in Cambridge.
