A poignant play by Tom Powell about two neglected teenagers, Daize and Ben, who find hope and connection in each other despite their difficult circumstances.
The Silence and the Noise opens at Bristol Old Vic on Tuesday 10 November, running through to Saturday 14 November. It's a production by Papatango Theatre Company and Pentabus, based on Tom Powell's play, which won the 2021 Papatango Prize after being chosen from more than 1,400 scripts. Papatango's artistic director George Turvey is directing, and the show is performed in the Weston Studio.
The story follows two teenagers: Daize, who has a sharp tongue and a sharper blade, and Ben, who has killer trainers but little else. Determined to protect her mum from his drug-dealing boss, Daize finds herself drawn to Ben, and the two neglected teenagers, natural enemies, begin to find in each other something no adult has ever given them. The Stage called it 'a modest masterpiece' and The Guardian a 'delicate love story of tenderness and tragedy'.
On stage, Deborah Olat plays Daize and Joe Dolan plays Ben. The production is rounded out by Stella Backman on set and costume design, St Cole on lighting, and Asaf Zohar on music and sound. It runs about 65 minutes with no interval, and is recommended for ages 13 and over, with references to drug use, neglect and unseen violence.
