A one-person theatre piece adapted and directed by Simon Reade, based on the novel by Michael Morpurgo, exploring the human cost of war.
Private Peaceful comes to the Bristol Old Vic for three nights this November, running from Thursday 12 to Saturday 14. It's a one-person stage adaptation of Michael Morpurgo's novel, the same author who wrote War Horse, and it's been adapted and directed by Simon Reade.
The whole show rests on a single actor, who carries the entire thing on their own, conjuring a whole world of characters, landscapes and emotions around the story of Tommo Peaceful. It's billed as an international smash hit, and it works on two levels: as a moving family drama and as a powerful reminder of the human cost of war. The production runs 80 minutes with no interval, so you're in and out in a single sitting without a break in the middle. It's recommended for ages 9 and over, making it one of those theatre trips you can actually take the kids along to.
There's also an education side to it. The production comes with an Education Pack of 50-60 minute activities in drama, English literature, English language and history, aimed at Key Stage 3 through to Key Stage 5, so if you're involved with a school or a youth group, there's a bit more to it than just the performance.
