90-minute autumn workshop to make a miniature witch's besom from cinnamon and oats as a protective charm for Samhain.
Alchymis is hosting a workshop called The Witch's Protective Charm on Friday 30 October, where you'll make your own miniature witch's broom. It runs from 18:00 to 19:00, and the whole thing takes about 90 minutes. The venue is at 3 Bank Chambers, Preston Circus, BN1 4JQ.
It's set right in the spooky season, and the workshop works from the idea that the besom — the traditional witch's broom — is used in autumn to ritually cleanse or sweep away negativity. You'll make your own miniature version out of cinnamon and oats, wheat or flax, and the intended place for it is hanging above a doorway as a protective charm. Each one is sealed with a bay leaf wish for Samhain and a charm of your own choosing, so you'll leave with something you've put your own touch on rather than just a generic craft project. Refreshments are served, too.
If you're not familiar with the terminology, Samhain is the Gaelic festival marking the end of the harvest and the start of the new year, traditionally celebrated around 31 October. The besom is the broom associated with that tradition, and the whole workshop leans into that autumn, end-of-year energy. It's a good fit for the time of year, especially if you're into the folklore side of things.
