A celebration of female resilience bringing together textile art, folk traditions and women's stories through literary readings, music and an exhibition.
The Wind in Their Sails comes to Rottingdean Windmill on Saturday 25 July, a day that brings textile art, folk traditions and women's stories to the old windmill in Rottingdean. It's an exhibition and a live event running from 09:00 to 21:00, put together by writer and teacher Michelle Porter.
The whole thing is built around the threads and re-stitched narratives of women's domestic crafts, histories and myths, and Porter describes it as a celebration of female resilience. That theme runs through the exhibition and the live programme, which pulls from a few different traditions. There's a textile arts exhibition to look through, and throughout the day, literary readings by women authors, poetry, short stories and a micro-lecture.
On the folk side, the day starts early with Morris dancing, followed by folk singers and a Mummers Play. The Brighton Folk Choir will also be singing. It's a long day, so you can drop in for one part or stay across the morning and afternoon.
