The Kelleth Piano Trio present music by Haydn, Beamish and Shostakovich, exploring themes of loss.
The Kelleth Piano Trio play St Mary's Church on Saturday 24 October, with the programme built around three works that speak of loss. It's a heavy theme for a Saturday evening, but the music comes from three very different places.
One of those is Joseph Haydn's Piano Trio in F# minor, Hob XV No. 26. It's a slow movement that Haydn wrote as his mother gradually disappeared into dementia, and it's that particular piece that Sally Beamish took as her starting point for Trance. Hearing the two side by side lets you trace the line from the original to the response.
The third work is Shostakovich's Piano Trio No. 2, dedicated to the memory of his closest friend. It was likely shaped by accounts of the horrors of Nazi concentration camps, and it doesn't hold back: it's grotesque and angry in places, and starkly beautiful in others. It's an intense, haunting piece of writing that sits at the heart of the evening.

Between them, the three works move from the personal grief of a son for his mother to the wider, darker losses of war and friendship. It's a programme that asks you to sit with those things rather than look away.
The concert runs from 18:00 to 19:00 at St Mary's Church, 61 St James' Street, BN2 1PR. Tickets are £5.00 for adults, and children go free.
