Book launch and talk by quantum physicist Vlatko Vedral on his book Portals to a New Reality, presented as a workshop.
Vlatko Vedral is at The Walrus on Tuesday 27 October, talking about his new book, Portals to a New Reality. He's a quantum physicist, and the whole evening is built around the book's central argument: that we're on the brink of a new revolution in physics.
Vedral's starting point is quantum information theory. He argues it's opened up radical new avenues, including experiments that could upend the way we think about the universe and challenge the widespread belief that nothing truly exists unless it's observed. He points out that modern physics is still following the paths set out by quantum mechanics and general relativity, despite the two being fundamentally in conflict. For this session, those ideas take the form of five thought experiments, so you'll get a proper look at the specific puzzles he's working through rather than just a broad overview.

It's run as a workshop, so it's more of a conversation than a lecture. The talk is from 19:30 to 21:00, and the venue is The Walrus at 10 Ship Street, BN1 1AD — it's downstairs in the Tusk Room. Tickets are £12 via Eventbrite, and it's worth keeping in mind that the venue has no wheelchair access.
