Bestselling author Elif Shafak gives a lecture on storytelling and identity at the Theatre Royal.
Elif Shafak is coming to the Theatre Royal on Tuesday 27 October, where she'll be giving a lecture on storytelling and identity. It's a bit of a departure from her usual work — she's known as a novelist, so this is her talking about the craft rather than reading from a book.
If you're not familiar, Shafak is a British-Turkish writer with 21 books to her name, 13 of them novels, and her work has been translated into 58 languages. She's built a reputation for the kind of storytelling that doesn't shy away from the big, messy stuff: identity, feminism, migration, spirituality, and the friction between East and West. 10 Minutes 38 Seconds in This Strange World was shortlisted for the Booker Prize and the RSL Ondaatje Prize, and The Island of Missing Trees made the Sunday Times top ten and was shortlisted for both the Costa Novel Award and the Women's Prize for Fiction. Her latest book is There are Rivers in the Sky.
Beyond the books, she's a Fellow and Vice President of the Royal Society of Literature, one of the BBC's 100 most inspiring and influential women, and holds the medal of Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres. In 2024, she was awarded the British Academy President's Medal. The lecture is titled In One Brief Moment All Eternity, and it's the storytelling and identity side of things she'll be focusing on.
