An evening walk around Victorian Brighton exploring tales of crime, punishment, ghosts and murder, led by actor Nick Richmond.
Nick Richmond is leading a Halloween walk through Brighton on Saturday 31 October, starting from St Nicholas' Church on Church Street. It's a two-hour evening tour that runs from 19:00 to 21:00, and Richmond is both the actor and the guide, so the stories are told rather than just listed.
The walk focuses on the dark side of Victorian Brighton, which it calls 'London by the Sea'. It pulls together tales of crime and punishment, ghosts and murder from the city's past, and brings to life a few local figures along the way. Among them are the Chocolate Box Poisoner, the Trunk Murders, Reverend Wagner and his home for 'fallen women', and the Hangman of Hove. It's the kind of tour that works best on Halloween night, when the city is already leaning into the spooky side of things.
One thing to keep in mind: it's not for everyone. The organisers say it isn't suitable for children under 16 or for anyone of a nervous disposition, so if you're easily rattled by the macabre, this might be one to skip. If you're fine with a bit of the grim, though, it's a good way to see a side of the city that doesn't usually make the postcards.
