Tour finale concert of indie-classical composer and guitarist Richard Durrant, featuring his original music and baroque guitar works.
Richard Durrant brings his tour to a close at St Nicholas' Church on Saturday 3 October, with the concert starting at 19:30. It's a homecoming of sorts: this is the church where he first played in public as a ten-year-old, and where he returned in June 1986 for the warm-up gig before his London debut. The tour finale brings him back to the same spot.
Durrant is an indie-classical composer and concert guitarist, and the set pulls from a few different worlds. He plays his own original, haunting guitar music alongside the High Baroque, the English Baroque and the English Folk Baroque — the last one a homage to John Renbourn and Bert Jansch. It's a broad reach, moving from his own writing through the early music of the Baroque period and into the folk-inflected style of the British guitar tradition.
He performs on two guitars. One is a Southwell concert guitar made from 5,000-year-old English oak; the other is the instrument Julian Bream played on his debut album. His work has been heard live on BBC Radio 2, 3, 4 and 6 Music, and he's been featured by Cerys Matthews, Tom Robinson, Sean Rafferty and Petroc Trelawney.
