Taxi Driver is back on the big screen at the Odeon in Bournemouth on Saturday 4 July, a special screening to mark the film's 50th anniversary. It's Martin Scorsese's 1976 character study, and seeing it in a cinema is the only way it really works — the slow, neon-lit crawl through New York at night, the long silences, and the way the city starts to feel as claustrophobic as the cab itself.
Robert De Niro leads as Travis Bickle, the veteran cabbie who spends his nights driving the city's seediest streets and his days in a state of growing isolation. He's joined by Jodie Foster as Iris, the young runaway he becomes obsessed with protecting, and Harvey Keitel as the street-level fixer who gets caught up in the fallout. It's a film that takes its time, letting the tension build until it boils over, and it's one of those few that actually earns its reputation.

If you've only ever seen it on a small screen, this is a good excuse to get it back in front of you. The 50th anniversary screening brings it back to the cinema where it belongs, and since it's a single-film event, it's an easy one to drop into on a Saturday. The Odeon is the venue, and the date is 4 July.
