A screening of the 1920 silent film Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde accompanied live by organist Aaron Hawthorne on the Compton pipe organ.
Aaron Hawthorne brings the 1920 silent film Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde to the Bournemouth Pavilion Theatre on Tuesday 3 November, with the whole thing scored live on the theatre's Compton pipe organ. It's a Paramount production from the silent era, with John Barrymore in the title role, Nita Naldi as Miss Gina and Brandon Hurst as Sir George Carew. The film runs on the big screen while Hawthorne provides an improvisational score created on the night, so the music you hear is being made up as the images unfold.
It's not Hawthorne's first go at this. He's toured Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde across the UK, mainland Europe and the USA, and it follows a run of other silent-film pairings: The Phantom of the Opera (1925) in 2021, Nosferatu in 2022, The Hunchback of Notre Dame in 2023 and The Cabinet of Dr Caligari the year after. He's one of the UK's best-known silent-film accompanists, and the Compton pipe organ at the Pavilion is the instrument he'll be working from throughout.
