Award-winning folk duo Will Finn and Rosie Calvert play traditional and contemporary folk at The Red Lion Folk Club in Kings Heath.
Will Finn and Rosie Calvert play The Red Lion Folk Club on Wednesday 25 November, their first Birmingham date in a while. They're an award-winning husband-and-wife duo playing traditional and contemporary folk, and they've got a bit of a range to them: the set pulls from old English ballads right through to gothic Americana, held together by the harmonies they're known for. They describe their arrangements as 'deceptively full', and they've now put out a second studio album.
They didn't start as a duo, though. They first made their name with the acapella quartet The Teacups, and both are graduates of Newcastle's Folk and Traditional Music degree. That background comes through in the way they work—they're not just singing over a guitar, they're backed by piano, steel pan and ukulele, so the sound changes from one song to the next. Their live shows have a reputation for vibrancy, flair and a warm stage presence, which fits the kind of night the Red Lion usually puts on.
The venue itself is an award-winning folk club run in the upstairs function room of The Red Lion pub on Vicarage Road in Kings Heath. It's a proper local spot, and the night is open to all ages, though under-14s need to be with an adult. One practical thing to keep in mind: the room is upstairs and there's no lift, so it's not wheelchair accessible, although priority seating is available if you need it.
